A Lesson from Bueller
(Posted on Friday, July 29, 2016)
In the words of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you might miss it.” Words to live by. And I try.
In my day-to-day routine everything seems to be moving at 100 miles an hour. An appointment needs rescheduling. I have to catch a flight. An employee has a problem. My daughter needs a hug. A P&L statement needs reviewing. Software needs developing and a client wants advice. The list goes on.
Where is my life in all that? Well, that is my life. My family, my employees and my clients all rolled into a smorgasbord of excitement and worry. I often find myself checking to make sure I am fulfilling my duties with each of these three categories. Sometimes something has to give. And there are many days when I fall short. In fact there have been days when my attempts to succeed at giving relationships priority have been a disaster. But most of the time I’m able to put the hug first. I put the employee with the problem and the client that needs advice next. The appointments, flights and P&L statements come last.
Life does move pretty fast! But my WHY in life is to help others. If I am being true to my purpose people in my life have to come before the things. That is my litmus test for how I spend my time. I make sure to slow down every now and then so I can put people before profits. Beuller was right!
